Term 3 Update

Within the blink of an eye, we are already half way through Term 3! We have had such a busy start to the term, with all Year 5 classes presenting their assembly. A huge congratulation to all of the students for the wonderful effort they put into practising and performing. The students spoke beautifully and we are very proud of them all!

Well done to all students who competed in the Australian Mathematics Competition. We have so many mathematicians in Year 5!

The first round of the Year 5 Spelling Bee was completed this week. Congratulations to all students who participated and good luck to those who have moved onto the next round. Keep practising your words!

Book Week Parade was held last Friday. It was fabulous to see all the students dressed up as book characters!

It has been wonderful to see so many students completing their homework each week. It provides students with the opportunity to revise concepts covered in class independently. Keep up the fabulous effort! Remember to keep reading and completing Literacy Pro quizzes. Let’s work together to improve our pass rate!

Super Scientist

                                        https://line.17qq.com/articles/fqqfppny.html

Super Scientist is back for Term 2. This time, the competition sees students present a science concept to the class by way of a power point or chart. The students will need to present an experiment or investigation.

A few rules to follow are:

No longer than five minutes, with a minimum of two minutes.

No specific science strand to draw from. Children are free to choose a topic that interest them but they must 'add value' to the topic. By this, I mean that students can not simply cut and paste a series of texts or pictures to a power point and recite it - they must attempt to re-frame it in their own words and give their own 'why this is interesting' perspective.

When assessing, we will be looking for the usual speaking etiquette (eye contact, volume, body language etc), plus the real passion and authentic attempt by the student to understand the concept and get their ideas across to their audience. The depth of knowledge is the key here.

Timeline - Title of the investigation/experiment to Mrs McIlwraith by Monday, 17th May.

Class presentations to be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Week 7.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is coming! On Friday, March 26th, the students will dress up for Harmony Day. It is a day of respect and appreciation for everyone who calls Australia home. It's also a wonderful time to celebrate our cultural diversity at Wattle Grove. We have many students and staff from different backgrounds and it is important that we recognise and celebrate our differences. Diversity is our strength! So this Friday, we will all be dressed in cultural attire or in Harmony Day orange. Classes around the school will be discussing the importance of respecting other cultures and celebrating our multicultural country. Students will also have the chance to show off their traditional outfits at our Harmony Day parade! We'll also celebrate this special day with our buddy classes, doing crafts and other activities.

It should be a wonderful day!

Merit Awards and 'Drop Everything and Talk'

Congratulations to Griffin, Makaylah, Lucas, Daniel and Makaylah who received a Merit Certificate at Friday's assembly. You have all made an outstanding start to Term 1 and should be very proud of your achievements. Keep up the fabulous work!

Drop Everything and Talk

In Week Four, the students were asked to discuss their biggest fear. Laylah and Franchesca were chosen to share their interesting responses.

What is Your Biggest Fear?

By Franchesca

In my opinion, I think that being afraid of heights is one of the scariest phobias a child can have because that is what I’m most scared of! Ever since I was a young child, I was always afraid of really tall buildings, or even swinging too high on a swing. This scares me because I would always get nervous in case something bad ever occurred, “What if I fall off?” or, “What will be the consequences if I broke my bone?” If I ever experienced my biggest fear, I would get a sore stomach, fidgety hands and I would almost lose my breath. I hope I get over this phobia soon enough.

What is Your Biggest Fear?

By Laylah

Well in life, I have a pretty big number of fears, but one of my main fears is definitely fire. Fires can happen anywhere at any time, and what makes them really scary is that they can spread really fast and really far. They also can destroy animal’s habitats and even kill humans as well as animals. To cover everything up, they are just big and really scary. So that’s why fire is my biggest fear.

Week 4 Update

Student Councillors

Introducing Room 26’s Student Councillors for Semester One, Sam and Isabella.

Outstanding effort, Sam and Isabella on being elected by the class to be the Student Councillors for Semester One. Congratulations also to all the students who delivered a Student Councillor speech to the class. Sam and Isabella will have many different responsibilities over the semester, one of which is taking over our classroom blog! We look forward to their updates.

Drop Everything and Talk

This semester we will be implementing a ‘Drop Everything and Talk’ session during the week. This involves students being given a topic and presenting their story or opinion to their fellow classmates. This provides students with a fantastic opportunity to work on their speaking and listening skills. Each week, two students will be selected by the class to share their answer on the class blog.

In Week 3, students were asked what the greatest gift they had ever received was. Isabella and Taylor’s responses were chosen to share.

The Greatest Gift – Isabella

This gift isn’t just mine…It’s everyone’s gift and that gift is luck and love. We are lucky Covid-19 isn’t near us. Everyone may not be lucky, but that’s ok. Our friends and family love us no matter what. The world belongs to each and every one of us. Deep in our heart there’s hate, but we can conquer that altogether. We may have misunderstandings sometimes in friendships, but we always forgive each other.

The Greatest Gift - Taylor

In my life, my greatest gift has been my dog. It all started with my parents and me. I kept begging for a dog 1000 times a day. I badly wanted a dog because we had recently lost our first two dogs, Bilbo and Spike. Losing our first two dogs made me feel sad since they were our pets and we had a bond. After a few days of me nagging for a dog, my parents took my sister and I for a drive. A few minutes later, we pulled over at a stranger’s house and they told us to stay inside the car. After a minutes wait in the car, my dad came in with an 8 month old puppy the size of your two hands. That’s how I got my greatest gift!

Speaking and Listening Task

All students will need to present a 2-5 minute presentation on the topic: What makes me special?

Presentations will be held in Week 4, from Wednesday, 3rd March. Presentations may be in the form of a power point or poster, and palm cards are essential. We look forward to hearing more about what makes each of you special.

Welcome back!

Welcome back to Room 26’s blog for 2021!

We hope you all had a lovely and refreshing holiday with your family and friends. While the school year has already gotten off to an unpredictable start, we are both thoroughly excited to be back in the classroom with our Year 5 students!

This blog will be updated throughout the term, to keep you up to date with what we are learning! Important information will also be added to the blog.

Homework will be available each week on the blog and will need to be completed and returned to school each Monday.

A Parent Information Evening will be held in the next few weeks and will provide detailed information regarding the focus concepts for this term and classroom expectations and procedures.

On Monday, students should wear sport shoes ready to participate in Sport and on Friday, please remember to bring your library books to school to return to the Library.

We look forward to the exciting adventures ahead of us this year.
